EXCERPTS RE: Marcos Correia
- Marcos Correia
- exposed as a fantasist
- Correia told police he had based his evidence on a "dream"
- divers recovered animal bones and claimed they could be Madeleine's fingers
- Clarence Mitchell
"We have never asked Mr Correia to conduct any searches and have good evidence to suggest his leads are not credible.
"The suggestion that the bones could have been a child's is entirely scaremongering and very hurtful to Gerry and Kate.
"Wild assumptions do not help the investigation. We will continue to work on the basis that Madeleine is alive."
Murat slams Portuguese cops
Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat has had his car bugged, it emerged yesterday. The Brit found the device when he was repairing his car - then found another attached to the car used by his girlfriend Michaela Walczuch. Furious Murat believe Portuguese cops bugged the cars in a desperate bid to nail him for Madeleine's abduction.
He is also investigating whether it could have been put there by the private detective agency hired by the McCanns. [Metodo3]
Murat, 33, discovered the surveillance equipment when he was repairing a fault underneath his Volkswagen. He then checked his Skoda Fabia, loaned to German Michaela, and immediately locked both cars away.
Police removed the GPS devices and insisted they were not responsible.
Meanwhile, lawyer Marcos Correia, who spent thousands scouring a reservoir where he claims Madeleine's body was dumped, was exposed as a fantasist.
A source close to the inquiry revealed: "When we asked him what he was basing his evidence on, he said, 'I had a dream'."
Correia sparked further heartache for Kate and Gerry, both 39, last week when his divers fished a bag of animal bones out of the waters - then claimed they could be child's fingers.
The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "We have never asked Mr Correia to conduct any searches and have good evidence to suggest his leads are not credible.
"The suggestion that the bones could have been a child's is entirely scaremongering and very hurtful to Gerry and Kate.
"Wild assumptions do not help the investigation. We will continue to work on the basis that Madeleine is alive."
